He can still remember getting to the top of that climbing frame for the first time and feeling he had conquered Mount Everest. And those swings, where he jumped off at the top of a big push and scraped all the skin off one of his knees. He wouldnât be allowed in that bit as a dog, thatâs for sure. But there is another part of the park where dogs can go. A few people are sitting on the grass. He doesnât pay them much attention as he sniffs for the right place (funny how he just KNOWS) and has a celebratory wee against a park bench.
Heâll hide in here as long as he has to.
Mum and Dad (and Dudley, which is too weird to think about right now) will be back tomorrow, so all Danny has to do is stay out for one night.
He tries to picture normal weekends. What if he never gets to have one again as a boy? Swimming first thing. Massive fry up for lunch. Playing a game on his Switch in the afternoon and movie night with pizza at the end. If heâs still a dog, how will that work?
The thought of normal makes him sad for a second but then he hears thwack-thump, followed by happy shouting.
A group of kids a bit older than him have arrived in the park with a football.
Danny can feel his fur rising in excitement along his back.
But hang on, he doesnât even like football. Whenever his mates at school or his cousin Priya go on about football, then Danny switches off. Apparently his doggy brain hasnât got that memo. Now he is running towards that ball as if his life depends on it. Diving into the middle of the game, he sinks his teeth into the football, feeling a strangely satisfying puff of air.
Oops. Might have punctured it.
Never mind! This is the BEST FOOTBALL GAME EVER!
There is a lot of shouting. One big teenage boy tries to grab his collar. But Danny canât seem to stop running around in circles. Itâs such FUN.
As someone grabs hold of his back legs, another wrestles the ball from his mouth.
âLook what this dog did to the ball!â
He feels his ears flattening. He really hadnât meant to break it. Maybe this is why Dudley sometimes does naughty things? It just feels too good to resist? Itâs so strange. He thinks like Danny, but Dudleyâs body is in the driving seat and making him act in very un-Dannyish ways.
